BEACH CLEANUP

CLEARING OCEAN PLASTIC FROM COAST OF VILANKULO ALL YEAR LONG

Tackling Ocean Plastic One Saturday at a Time

Since 2018, 25 volunteers have been cleared 17 kilometers of beach along the coast of Vilankulo on a weekly basis. They have cleared over 35 tons of waste - keeping it out of the ocean for good. One third of the plastic is recycled. The beach cleaners are out-of-work youth and elders who use their symbolic subsidies to buy basic goods.

The first volunteers came together in 2018 and found support from local hotels. In 2020 when tourism “died” the team found support through short term grants. For 2023, funding came from crowdfunding on the Global Giving platform and ongoing support from Bahia Mar and Santorini Hotels. For 2024, we hope to find long term partnership.

Project costs include fuel to transport filled sacks from the coast to ParCo’s HQ (office and plastic center) and well as admin costs to run the plastic center.
